I know, this title might seem a little dramatic. And that's because it kind of was! Last year my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I told him that all I wanted was a fun memory. ''Just a memory'' I said. I would have settled for our night out at my favorite restaurant Proof on Main in Lousiville, KY. Which we did on my birthday with two of our closest friends. That was an awesome night! Also, I am obsessed with the way the restaurant makes a pop tart. No, not the type of pop tart you buy from the grocery store for morning sugary substance. I am talking about the most perfect pastry on earth made of Chicken Liver Pâté and a specific in-season fruit. It's a decadent! Please refrain from letting me know you hate chicken livers if you have never tried their pop tart! It gave me a new perspective on foods I've never tried!Â
Back to the topic! My husband asked me if I would like to Sky Dive for my birthday. I could feel my heart beating in my throat but I said yes faster than I could think of all the reasons not to. A couple of weeks later we were walking into a warehouse full of skydiving gear and a handful of people. We basically signed our lives away and sat with a trainer for about 15-20 minutes. Then we chose our sky diving gear. There was a slight hold on the day from the weather. But it cleared up and we watched a few groups take off and land precisely and safely in their designated landing area.Â
We boarded the plane where our instructors attached themselves to our backs on the way up. This is what they call Tandem Sky Diving. You didn't think I was just gonna jump out on my own my first time, did you? The opportunity presented itself to back out. There was no pressure to jump. They graciously let their clients go through that mental battle on their own while positively guiding and ensuring that they are in good hands. My instructor and I waved goodbye to my husband and scooted to the edge of the plane door till I hung out of the plane. Following his instruction tucking my head and lifting my legs as instructed. He gave one hard push and we were air-bound soaring through the sky free falling from 10,000 feet.
The air resistance beneath me is almost indescribable. It felt like a big hug! I was screaming in excitement (don't do that while free falling by the way) looking around me while checking my altitude. At 5,000 feet I pulled my parachute cord and was jerked to a halt in the sky before the second part of our decent came. My instructor told me to look to my right, where I got to see my husband free falling, then his parachute opened as well. From there my instructor showed off ways to spin around, cloud surf and come to what felt like a complete pause in the sky. My last round of spins before we landed had me feeling a bit queasy. We landed just after my husband did. Disconnected and I went to my knees for a second to breathe and recuperate. Then we road in a golf cart back to the warehouse feeling like kings! We stopped nearby for lunch and talked about how amazing that felt and shared our perspective of how fun that was!
