âIt was a love out of a fairytale. Damsel in distress. Hero comes, saves said damsel. Sweeps this damsel off into a distant land. Marries her in a big, giant, castle. So let's hope that this day is the first of many, long and happy days together.â -JG
If you are reading this, I know you are here for the story, not the nutshell. So Iâm going to share how we met in three parts. The man I met was actually a bear, named Ragnorauck. For short I called him Rag. The woman he met was a Blood Elf named Sugarkane. For short he called me Sugar. Are you confused yet? Donât worry, you wonât be for too long. It all started when two people logged into World of Warcraft. Yes, that's right. Good ole WoW.Â
Let's just start with some back story! Back in the days of Myspace, AIM and the early days of Facebook. I became a PC gamer. My ex-husband introduced me to WoW before he joined the military and left for three months. I knew it was going to be tough but I fell into my own groove and it really wasn't so bad. I worked at Victoria's Secret as a Lead/Manager. I really enjoyed my job and my fellow employees! I would go out and hang with friends. I read lots of books. Lots of Vampire books like The Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris. (Which you may know now at True Blood) The Undead Series by MaryJanice Davison. Twilight Saga.. yes this was the era of Twilight! And when I wasn't reading. I was watching The Boondock Saints and Fight Club on repeat while playing World of Warcraft, becoming a badass Blood Elf Warlock.Â
My ex-husband became stationed a 12-hour roundtrip drive away from our condo in Las Vegas. It wasn't long before things went south. He was mastering a six month game of âDestroy Elisa and our Marriage.â A cycle of giving me hope then taking it away. I was so tired of wondering what version of him I would get next. So I broke the game. I filed for divorce so I could move on with my life and my cat. Then I moved back to California. Well, obviously my ex isn't what we are here to talk about (Thank you, Next!) but I think it's important to see things clearly from the beginning. I feel like my reason for playing video games at this point was to escape my own reality. I would forget about my problems logging into a world of so many things to do!
By night, I was a magical goddess with tons of anonymous funny friends. By day, I was at work keeping my mind busy. Most days I was on autopilot and my family was keeping me alive. My grandparents welcomed me back in their home and force fed me soup. My sister cried with me. My brother made me leave my room. Occasionally my he even got me to laugh and have some fun. My mother helped boost my confidence and repair my broken heart. I was starting to feel like myself again. I became really close with my mom in this time period. My best friend, Amber, was there to give me advice and stood behind any decision I made. No matter how dumb it was. Itâs times like these you never forget who was there for you and I am so thankful. Now that you understand why I was playing Video Games so much. We can move onto how I came to meet Joe.
One day while I was playing WoW. I decided to leave all of my gear (armor) in the bank and travel to a distant land for a seasonal quest. I know this is already sounding complicated to people that donât play these kinds of games. But bear with me for a moment. In the game, if your armor is damaged you have to pay gold to repair it. I was being cheap and stowed my gear away in the virtual bank. I put a gorgeous red dress on my character, Sugarkane, that didnt cost anything to repair and set out on my quest. I took off to distant enemy lands and sneakily made my way into their fortress to complete my quest. I was in and out.Â
With success, I rode back on a ship and attempted to cross the dock to board another enemy ship. Suddenly, elite guards were attacking me. I was helpless and dying. My life was draining and I couldn't move and since I didn't have the gear, I didnt have the Health or Mana (Magic) to take them on. All I could do is sit there and hammer down on buttons fighting for my life. Just when I thought my character was going to be sent to the nearest graveyard. (Where I would just run back to my body as a ghost and resurrect myself.) Out of nowhere, this giant bear appeared and with a swipe, he killed everything that was attacking me and healed me. I messaged him, âThank you.â He said, âNo problem.â And we went on our separate ways. But once again, I was being attacked. I panned my camera view around to see if my hero was still close by. Without having to ask, he noticed I was in trouble again and was already circling back and saved me. I apologized for being a silly woman and promised I would hearth back to the bank and put my gear back on!
Part 2 will continue soon. Thank you for reading!
